If you had unprotected sex or believe your birth control failed, you may be searching for answers and wondering whether the abortion pill and Plan B are the same thing.

The reality is, the two serve very different purposes, and understanding the distinction matters for your body and your next steps.

PCS Health is here to offer clear, medically accurate information and free, confidential support as you sort through your options.

How Plan B Works

Plan B, sometimes called the “morning-after pill,” is an emergency contraceptive.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, it is intended to prevent pregnancy before it begins. It generally works by stopping the ovary from releasing an egg, blocking fertilization, or preventing a fertilized egg from attaching to the uterine lining.

Plan B is usually taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex or birth control failure. It is most effective within 72 hours, though it may still have an effect up to 5 days afterward.

Possible side effects of Plan B include:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Breast tenderness
  • Lower abdominal pain or cramping
  • Spotting between periods
  • An earlier, later, heavier, or lighter next period

If your period is more than a week late after taking Plan B, contact your healthcare provider.

How the Abortion Pill Works

The abortion pill, also known as a medical abortion, ends a pregnancy that has already implanted in the uterus.

Medical abortion actually uses two different drugs.

Mifepristone blocks progesterone, the hormone needed to sustain a pregnancy, causing the pregnancy to detach from the uterine wall.

Misoprostol is then taken, causing the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy tissue through the vagina.

It is important to note that the FDA has approved this regimen only through 10 weeks of gestation.

Risks tied to the abortion pill include:

  • Heavy or prolonged bleeding
  • Severe cramping
  • Retained pregnancy tissue, also called an incomplete abortion
  • Infection
  • Fever and chills
  • Allergic reaction to the medications
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea

Soaking through two thick pads in an hour, a fever lasting more than 24 hours, or ongoing pregnancy symptoms are signs you should seek medical care right away.

An undiagnosed ectopic pregnancy can also make taking the abortion pill dangerous, which is why getting an ultrasound scan to confirm the location and age of the pregnancy first is so important.
